Bouncing Back!

It’s been 5 months since the last time I’ve posted about my new website/blog Wanderful Wordsmith. It’s not my intention to abandon my beloved Curly Bookworm. I was too occupied to maintain two blogs! I really missed Curly Bookworm and my fellow bloggers in my community here.

So what happened in my absence here? Well, I’ve been contributing to two e-magazines in Thailand which is based in Bangkok. I actually juggled teaching ESL to Mongolian doctors, writing for e-magazines, and travel blogging! Check out my posts (click the titles):

August Awesomeness Overload It’s about awesome blessings from above.

  • Pinoy Thaiyo is the first and only Filipino e-magazine in Thailand. As one of the pioneering team, I was assigned as a columnist for Amazing Pinoy. I feature Filipinos (even half Filipinos) who excel with expertise in their respective fields and give glory to our motherland. They’re exceptional and gifted people from all walks of life who inspire and imbue patriotism, perseverance, patience and persistence.

Wanderful Wordsmith

For the past few weeks, I’ve scribbled my musings, and yet failed to blog about them. Then came an impression to jump start a new blog, Wanderful Wordsmith. This made me excited earlier last week. While I can’t consistently blog here in my main blog, I have a new one to catch up with. That could be really challenging, but I am hoping to really keep it updated with inspiring posts.

A wandering wordsmith who chases her musings.

A wandering wordsmith who chases her musings.

So, what’s in Wanderful Wordsmith for you? If you’re a travel and nature enthusiast, you’ll surely look forward to reading some of my adventures. And you might as well love the virtual tour you’ll experience through my hotel and resort reviews, and wonderful places I’ve been.

Wanderful Wordsmith was conceptualized on the third week of June 2015. “Wanderful” simply means full of wanderings, and “wordsmith”, a writer. Its niche is focused, and yet, not limited on traveling and writing. Here are the entries and topics:
Surreal Sojourn – travel and adventures, hotel and resort reviews
Runner’s Reverie – running musings and race reviews
Curly Bookworm – book reviews and author features (throwback posts from main blog)
Ethereal Epiphany – spiritual insight and introspection
Potpourri of Poetry – poems and poet features
Wishful Writer– blogging and writing, advocacy and product reviews

This blog is dedicated to my late father who already rested from his life’s journey. His passion of traveling and wandering had left a lasting impact on me and my family. I missed my father so much, she could just rely on the Heavenly Father.

On Father’s Day, I jump started the new website to honor my calling as an apprentice of the Heavenly Author:
Chasing chances to change the world through the Word – one reader at a time.

This time, I’m very intentional. I will limit blogging here. So, I encourage you to follow and subscribe to my new blog:

How to Deal with PDA

I was in Boracay Island, in Station 1, to be specific. I’ve grown up spending some vacations there in that white paradise, coz my mother hails from Aklan. But although I’ve got used to see some liberated foreigners displaying their affections in public, I was caught unaware one time.

I was in haste on my way to the beachfront to catch the surreal sunset: when the seemingly shy sun’s glorious escape would leave a trace of heavenly hues of lilac, shimmering in gold and crimson. Almost everyone was mesmerized to pause and ponder on its picturesque wonders.

Captivating scenery when the shy sun hides at the western horizon on the dusk.

Captivating scenery when the shy sun hides at the western horizon on the dusk.

Then, boom! There were lovers caught in fiery passion of French kiss.

Who cares? But, I was petrified! Yet in the split of seconds, I continued with my strides. It wasn’t a movie to watch, after all.

“GET A ROOM” I heard a whisper from a spectator, grinning with envy.

It astonishes me how people could freely display their affection in public!

But what astounds me the most is a PDA not only within the parameter of a mall, public infrastructure, a park, but in the social media.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind other people’s business.

But, there’s something I despise – PDA: Public Display of Anger!

Delayed Flight, Frustrations, Fight

It was my first time to be caught in cataclysmic flight. Twice our flight got delayed. We’re supposed to depart at past 8:00 AM for a domestic flight. Then, it was moved to 11:00 AM. And unfortunately, moved again to past 2:00 PM, almost 3:00 PM! We’ve waited for almost seven hours. It wasn’t a wearisome waiting, if it weren’t for a scene.

Most of the flights were delayed, some got canceled. People were panicking. Others were in great rage. There was a group of passengers who rallied inside the waiting area from the gate. Some were crying, some were shouting their lungs out. Ranting to the fullest, until they reached the other side of the whole building. No wonder, the incident was televised.

That batch of passengers were like hostages, left locked in the shuttle. They weren’t oriented that their flight was again delayed. They waited for 45 minutes without proper orientation. Kids were screaming, and quite suffocated. Grown-up were cussing and ranting their nerves out.

I wasn’t able to fit my feet in their shoes, albeit we too suffered. I got nervous and I just prayed. There’s nothing I could do to deal that horrible situation but to be still. Send an emergency call to heaven for peace and comfort. “Oh wait, meekly wait, and murmur not!”

Rent a Room to Rant

Ok, I’m not an expert with this. I’ve learned my lesson in a hard way, long ago. Having an activist instinct, loquaciousness could let loose a manifold of rants for certain issues (especially political issues in the government and church). But I see to it, I am doing it the right way, I still choose the words to say or type at my social account. I don’t cuss. Albeit I want to awaken minds and spread awareness. But later on, I realized that no matter how well I thought I would do it, it’s still a rant. The Biblical principles emphasized in Philippians 4:8 and Proverbs 10:19 are still compromised. Btw, who can tame the tongue? (James 3:1-12)

“In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise” ~ Proverbs 10:19

A principle that is often taken for granted.

A principle that is often taken for granted.

It’s tempting to RANT when you know personally, and you’re friends with the people involved in an issue. To rant and let the people know you are human, you are affected too could ease your sorrow; but the eruption of seemingly dormant volcano of emotion would surely leave a messy aftermath. You rather hold your peace through God’s grace.

The social media is a multifaceted tool both to build and to tear down people. While it’s very effective to hasten the advancement of God’s cause, it could also be used by the devil to ruin lives, spread venomous issues which could engulfed a thick foliage through a fiery, wild fire. We all know that. But how do we deal with it?

Moreover, the social media has been abused by many, using it as an open courtroom to throw quick judgement and condemnation at people they don’t even know personally or know not, even as an acquaintance. Before a due process, the ill verdict could be done ahead of it. You weren’t born yesterday not to get what I mean.

Pray It Out Loud

Ok, I’m not going to preach, promise! 🙂

There’s no argument with the power of prayer. And it’s very comforting to know that when you pray, you aren’t misunderstood and being taken for granted by the ONE who is JUST to listen intently. He is RIGHTEOUS enough to discern the inner most thoughts and feelings you have. But you still need to let it be known to God. (Matt. 11:28-30)

So if you’re ANGRY, shout it out loud — to God. Rant, if you want to break free from bottling up. Better go to your closet, or room to do it. At least you would have a privacy, and people won’t be able to make an issue out of it. Issue begets issue, if not handled well. If you don’t want to add complications to it, just be silent.

There are times when SILENCE is GOLDEN.

It’s healthy to loosen up your emotions, granted that it’s between you and God. Break down if need be. But stand up with Him who answers prayers. Pray for the issue, the people involved and pray for yourself how to let go and let God.

“If you want to STAND like Jesus, You should KNEEL like Jesus.” ~ Kneeology, Aias C.

Again, I would reiterate, I’m not expert on this. I also fall short of God’s glory. And yet, no matter how many times I stumble, I would rise again and again. But over the time, I learned to sulk in a healthy way and to savor serenity amidst chaos.

Perfect peace comes from God. The Peacespeaker still speaks this time like the days of the disciples of old. All you have to do is to be STILL and KNOW that HE is GOD.

In the stillness, His voice is heard the loudest. ~ Curly Bookworm

Why rent a room when you can create your own room to rant?

Fun Facts Fans Should Know About Weanne

Disclaimer: The facts were thoughtfully chosen, based on a documented research. The intention of the author is neither to put the person in an unfavorable, funny circumstance nor to inflict shame. This is a fun way to honor a friend on her birthday, and encourage the fans to know her on a personal basis. All emphasis intended.

I’ve been Weanne Myrrh ‘Wea’ Razon Estrada’s fan-turned-friend. I even considered myself a “fans club”, telling her that I’m equivalent to a dozen of fans, especially when it comes to her love life. A cheering squad, its exaggerated counterpart. Haha

Ok, so to tell a short background to justify the first statement, let’s walk down memory lane. During late 90’s, I first heard Wea’s voice through a cassette tape. Yeah, she’s a recording artist at a tender age, together with her older sister, Dianne Claire and some other gifted kids. I’m a fan. I love singing, and I told myself, I’ll meet her/them one day, and perhaps sing with her/them.

So after several years, I finally set foot at AUP, and tsaraaaaaan! I finally met her.

But I lately found out, she focused more on playing the piano and had been the accompanying pianist. She doesn’t render SOLO. No false hope. She just doesn’t sing solo. Unless someone powerful enough to persuade would inspire her to sing, perhaps “I See the Light” (theme song). Haha

But I’m grateful that I’ve got that once-in-a-lifetime rendition with her being my accompanying pianist during the Health Professionals Convention last year. I ain’t a health practitioner though.

*The ‘haha’ is something I got from Wea. There’s a blog post about why she often put that at the last part of her sentence. But this isn’t just about mimicking her. That’s the power of influence! Haha

Soya is way beyond cutie. She's a walking, smart stuffed toy.

Wea’s baby Soya is way beyond cutie. She’s a walking, smart stuffed toy. Soya has her lil’ puppies now. Time flies indeed!

Wonder Woman, Wander Weanne

It would take a blog series to enumerate the fun facts. So I chose the most significant ones, enough for a fan to know to be legit. Haha

She’s all that – gifted, achiever, leader, topnotch, trustworthy, thoughtful, practical, persistent although self-proclaimed “professional procrastinator”. A loving daughter, loving sister, caring friend, extra-caring girlfriend (understatement, unless the description comes from her boyfie).

But aside from being a wonder woman, she likes to wander as a traveler. She’s actually a globetrotter, having conquered countries in Europe, United States of America (where she sojourn for her graduate studies), and some Asian countries. There are more in her bucket list. But when it comes to traveling, she’s not ‘maarte’. She’s a genius girl-next-door with a gorgeous smile. She’s an exceptional lovely person inside-out.

There was one trip from Paseo (Sta. Rosa) to AUP (Adventist University of the Philippines) with her, and I wondered how her mind wandered. The jeepney stopped already in front of AUP gate, we already toned down from being engrossed with our random topics with a whimsical whiplash (we jump from one topic to another, as always, haha) during the travel. She was quiet and was looking afar. I didn’t bother reminding her we’re already in AUP. She was in reverie, I guessed she will continue traveling to Sta. Rosa Heights or visit a friend somewhere near my place. So when the jeepney started moving, about a minute, she realized, she missed it.

“Wea, saan ka pala pupunta?” I asked her.

“Ay ate Lai, AUP na pala! …ayy! Para po manong!” she surprisingly screamed and hurriedly went out with poise. Haha

She flushed, but not-so-red, I know she felt embarrassed.

I forgot if I mentioned to her, after she went out, some of the people in the jeepney said: “Di ba, yon yung Top 1 sa Nursing Board Exam (Nursing Licensure Exam in 2010)? Ayon oh, sya yung nasa tarpaulin!”

That’s how she wondered when we wandered.

Frisson for French

When she opens her mouth, either to host an event or to deliver a speech, she’s a magnet. I don’t wanna be biased as a friend, but many people have attested to that. That’s why she got many fans. Whether covered by television network, or local videographer, her eloquence is evident. God endowed her a gift in speech.

She made her graduation speech soon before her graduation, and left thousands of audience inspired and quite petrified. Spontaneous. Very moving. Okay, okay, she’s capable, after all, she’s an achiever from elementary until college – always on the top. But she’s so down-to-earth. No hint of arrogance, whatsoever.

Since she loves to travel, she also loves foreign language. But you should excuse her French. Last year, she finally sojourned in Paris. Dreams do come true! She finally saw the epic Eiffel Tower and gallivant at the heart thump-thumping, Love Lock Bridge. Only to realize and confess afterwards that she got confused of La Dolce Vita as French, when in fact, it’s Italian. And that’s her blog’s name. Haha

imageedit_5_3789440810Read about it: http://weannewashere.tumblr.com/post/83312050617/paris-day-1-excuse-my-french

Attempted Arson

She’s harmless as it may appear. Yeah, she is. But you shouldn’t mess up with her. The lawn near the College of Nursing was on fire before her graduation; she’s one of the responsible ones (she’s the graduating president and college president of her batch). It happened during a very significant activity. The fire from the bonfire set ablaze and they had a hard time to tame it. It was unintentional and an accident, no one ever imagined it would happen.

Burn AUP? Nah! The sub-headline was just an exaggeration. I can’t imagine her being tarantacious, lacking grace and poise to act on that crime, when farewell party turned into firewell frenzy (*firewell is borrowed term from her friend)

But really, you shouldn’t mess up with Wea! Haha

Of Beauty and Bullying

Wea confuses people whether she’s Chinese or Korean. She hides her eyes when she smiles, but she’s plain Filipino, from mixed ancestors.

Who would imagine Sandara Park would rise in stardom here in our country? She had a humbling beginning prior to her discovery in local showbiz. Who would have thought, she’ll be more famous as how she is now, as a singer (2NE1) and actress in Korea?

Being misconstrued as her friend when she posted a fangirling shot with Sandara during a movie shoot in AUP, and post it in social media, she had a foretaste of bullying. There was a girl who commented nasty things about her looks compared to Sandara’s. It’s been a laughing stock, even sometimes when close friends would make fun of her. She’s not taking it personally though.

Read about it and look at their pic and the cyberbullying (Wea, don’t sue me for this, haha): http://weannewashere.tumblr.com/search/Sandara+Park

Bullying. Stereotyping. Exploitation. These are some of the negative and ill doings she hope to evade or help eradicate, with her campaign on upholding the human rights and advocacy to help the plight of Filipino nurses here and abroad. The ripple effect was beyond measure.

Can you also see her bright future? Insert Ser! ahem. haha

Can you also see her bright future? Insert Ser! ahem. haha

She’s known for goodwill.

She has a humungous heart.

She has some funny moments which manifested her vulnerability.

She’s not perfect. But imperfectly perfect in her ways.

Do you have some funny facts about her which I might have missed knowing? Feel free to leave a comment. Haha

*I hope and pray that God will continue to make her channel of his goodness and blessings; may more lives be forever touched.

Dear Wea,

I’m just behind your back. I’m keeping track of your blog, LOL. Keep sharing how wonderful the God we serve is! Stay loving and blooming. I’m cheering for you and your academic and love life milestones. Alam mo yan! Thanks for the bongga friendship!

For the efforts, especially praying for my future special someone, much gratitude and gaiety! Haha.

Melodious Birthday! 😀

P.S.

You’re missed to the moon and back.

Your funny fan, friend, and sisterfromanothermother,

Te Lai.

Off the Shelf

Off the Shelf

“Take a look at your bookcase. If you had enough free time, which book would be the first one you’d like to reread? Why?”

***

Well, though I’m in a hurry this time to post my daily musing, I’ll take time to answer this question from the daily post.

I have enormous books in the shelf which I wanna reread! Mitch Albom’s books are on the top list.

  • The First Phone Call from Heaven
  • Tuesdays with Morrie
  • For One More Day
  • The Five People You Meet in Heaven (I don’t have my copy, from a friend’s shelf)

Caught in the Act, taken at the Toastbox in Solenad 2, Nuvali just last week. Rereading, actually 🙂

Obviously, Mitch Albom’s recent book has been my top favorite among his master pieces! I also love Tuesdays with Morrie big time! There’s a greater reason behind why I love it the most, not to mention, it’s simply profound!

Love at first sight, to exaggerate!

Love at first sight, to exaggerate!

Mitch Albom visited our country, not only to give huge amount of money for the Yolanda victims through National Bookstore Foundation and Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, but also to promote his new book earlier this year. I have a lot of friends in YBH, including the co-founder, Dr. Anton Lim. So, I was more than grateful for his generosity and support to our kababayans — emitting compassion is his own unique way.

So when I visited National Bookstore on April 18, 2014, my heart skipped a beat. I actually posted the photo in my Facebook timeline with a caption:I left my heart at the bookstore. Will return to take it back.” But I wasn’t able to return to buy due to busyness and yeah, I was broke!

Gratefully, I didn’t! 12 days after, I received a copy of my own, sent thru a courier, LBC! Surprise of all surprises!

Ms Apple

Beware of what you wish for!

DAY 59 (100 Happy Days entry, April 30th)

Best Surprise ever!

“Be aware & beware of what you wish for.” ~Curly Bookworm

Seemed it’s Christmas or my birthday!

I received a package from Ms. Apple, just to find out that she saw my post re Mitch Albom’s latest book many days ago. There’s no occasion, and that made it more amazing!

“Helping Yolanda victims is like answering a phone call from heaven”. ~ Albom

Ms. Apple is indeed gifted with generosity & thoughtfulness. Through #amBAG campaign, we were able to get connected and built friendship! I’m so blessed sharing the joy of helping others with her. And our talk over the phone was also surprising!

Ms. Apple, thanks a lot once again for the precious time, 1:01:04! Never thought we already consumed more than an hour! Humbling experience it was!

God bless your heart more!

P.S.
Thanks for the special delivery of my heart which I left in the bookstore, through this book!

***

I’m humbled, blessed and really felt special coz Ms. Apple and I haven’t met personally, and yet with our communications, it seemed we’ve known each other for a long time!

Her response: I am honored to fulfill one of your wishes, it may not be an expensive one, but knowing that it made you happy, it has made me happier. May you continue to inspire your readers as you have inspired me. May God continuously bless you and your family, so you can continuously bless others too…hugs and kisses.”

Special Place in My Heart

Two things usually happen to my favorite books; either I’ll read it hastily and wouldn’t stop until I finish it, or read it slowly, as if thoroughly masticating a sumptuous meal. I did the same thing to Mitch Albom’s books. Yet, The Phone Call from Heaven has a significant meaning, since I lost loved ones. Though I have a different view/belief on the state of the dead, I somehow appreciate this kind of literature!

DAY 61 (100 Happy Days entry, May 2nd)

The most inspiring remembrance my late ate Leah left, her hand-made, pressed flowers bookmark done 12 years ago.

My sole companion at the NAIA International Airport, Philippine Airlines, bound to Laguindingan Airport, on May 16th. I realized that I wore the same dress then in my recent photos taken at Toast Box! The best way to kill time is reading a fabulous book! 🙂

More of my favorite books which I hope to reread. So inspiring and very moving!

More of my favorite books which I hope to reread. So inspiring and very moving!

One at a Time

I love to juggle work, and I apply the same multitasking in reading books. I sometimes read three books simultaneously in a week. One in the morning, another one during vacant periods, and the last one at night, without messing up with info and details. I love doing that! But it’s still best to read and enjoy a book, one at a time.

As much as I love to share what I’ve read, and discuss what I love about the dozens of books I actually wanna reread, let me invite you to subscribe, or follow my blog so you can be updated. This main blog is actually intended for book reviews, musings and articles about books and my bookworm adventures. I will restart writing reviews in my website, under renovation: lailaniefronda.weebly.com

Keep posted! Please feel free to suggest books that meant a lot to you, books that are exceptionally invigorating. Feel free to share this blog post to your friends too! 🙂

AmBAG Glows at Good Morning Club

People all over the world, gaze with wonder at the world-renowned Amazing Race. Huge numbers of watchers from all walks of life follow the journey with thrill for the task and trial, the participating partners travail.

Meanwhile, in the world of Game Changers and Change Makers, a different amazing race is about to end, and many supporters and cheerers all over the world (literally), and in the world of entertainment industry is anticipating who would prevail!

I am referring to the Friendly Challenge between best buddies: ‘Chief ThorMentor’ Doc Anton Mari Lim and ‘SuperMentoree’ Josh Mahinay, and their support groups, Team Doc Anton and Team Josh. The Race-to-100 Sales’ days are numbered! Yes! Barely 3 days more!

In case you missed the blog updates, or you’ve just seen this entry, here are the links to earlier posts. These include the AmBAG Campaign blurb, until the last update. (Click the titles to read the posts).

From Supot to School Bag. @joshmahinay , prime mover & founder of @bag943 . As a child he would walk 10kms to school, carrying all his books & school things in a plastic bag exactly like the one he is holding on to now. When he returned to his remote hometown in Zamboanga Sibugay , he saw a kid carrying the same supot . It was a sign from God that he had to do something about it. This is his way of giving back. He has been a recipient of people’s generosity , saving him fr a life of poverty. Let us be part of this culture of generosity.

Gracing Good Morning Club

Early today, AmBAG was again featured! After Josh Mahinay’s guesting in DZMM TeleRadyo with hosts Julius Babao and Nina Corpuz, he got another invitation to grace at TV5’s Good Morning Club. All of these were done through Ms. Christine Babao’s initiative. She has become the BIG SISTER to BAG943, especially to Josh and Team Josh. She’s shown sincere and superb support that resulted to the sprinting spree of Team Josh, catching up with fast-paced Team Doc Anton.

The highlight of the interview was about Josh’s childhood days, when he’s got the famous nickname, “supot/plastic boy” among his classmates. He used a sando plastic bag (red striped) to carry his school supplies and books; he used to ask for at a “tindahan” (mini store). He used to walk 10km a day going to school, with high hopes of acquiring education that would equip him to reach his dreams.

But his life drastically changed when a distant relative gave him a backpack. That’s the first decent bag he had, which made him feel he belong to the class! It boosted his aspirations in chasing his dreams, and in changing his life. The rest was a humbling history of his quest in the Western World and of his return to his beloved country to pursue greener pastures.

From a simple tweet which Ms. Christine read, she not only purchased backpacks, not only back-up the interview at DZMM TeleRadyo yesterday, but also invited Josh for an interview at her morning show early today. What a superb supporter!

Beauteous Bag of Dreams

Once a “supot boy”, Josh has been a “supportive bag giver” through the Bag of Dreams Project, which involves other generous people, to pay forward the generosity, goodness and compassion he received throughout his journey.

Now that BAG943’s AmBAG Campaign continues, he was able to rally more people to leave footprints of faith and fervent support to this advocacy. He’s blessed tremendously with same passionate people, and most importantly, a partner he teasingly calls “TorMENTOR”. Doc Anton Mari Lim is known for his volunteerism, patriotism and socialism. He’s the veterinary doctor who helped Kabang, the Aspin hero who save the lives of kids from death, though severely wounded. He’s also recognized for his medical missions with Tzu Chi Foundation and Yellow Boat of Hope and Yellow School of Hope Foundation.  They’re indeed a thrilling tandem of champions for children and for humanity; channels of God’s love and blessings.

Sprinting with the Stars

While Team Josh enjoys the blessings channeled through the numerous supporters, especially the Babao couple, Team Doc Anton cast the creative craft through Ms. Apple Pia Peji, a lovely loyalist of the team. Since she’s working in ABS-CBN, she was able to rally the AmBAG campaign among Umagang Kay Ganda Anchors. TeamJosh got Kapatid stars, TeamDocAnton got Kapamilya stars. Now, I wonder if there would be Kapuso stars who would join the AmBAG campaign.

Grace Like the Underground River

Simply nostalgic!
Streams of memoirs flooded me! I can’t wait for the next Palawan visit! It’s been almost a decade since I first visited there, December 2004! 😀

Have you been to Ugong Rock Cave? 🙂 It’s a must visit cave too!

Youth, large, lusty, loving – youth full of grace, force, fascination.

Do you know that Old Age may come after you with equal grace, force, fascination?

Walt Whitman wrote the words that my mother seems to live by. Her dream of visiting the Grand Canyon came true the previous year, but she ain’t done yet. She still had Puerto Princesa Underground River, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, to check off her bucket list. She had just turned 80, not an age for dilly-dallying. We flew to Palawan that summer with my eldest brother and nephew.

To the Girls Who Travel: Don’t Date a Guy Who Doesn’t

Oh well! Cheerios to the men who travel and yet remain at home with himself.

“Don’t date a guy who doesn’t travel. He will promise you the world, and then you realize: he wasn’t talking about the world, he was talking about his world. ”

love that line the most! 😀

The Gypsea Chronicles

Yes, you are the girl with the unkempt room and poor time management. You have many things in your head, most of which are notes-to-self on what your future self should do or go to. You are a dreamer, and that means that if the guy you date isn’t like you, it’s unlikely to work out.

Don’t date a guy who doesn’t travel. He is the guy with the medicine cabinet filled with shaving cream, hair gel and toothbrushes he doesn’t use anymore. His skin is fair and soft like a baby’s, which means he doesn’t go out much or at all. He is intolerant to the sun, when in fact you love every minute you are under it, soaking each ray of sunshine into your now bronze skin. He combs and styles his hair in memorized strokes every morning (as he has been doing this for months, maybe years…

LRT: Let the Ride Tarry

My adrenaline rush was at its peak on Sunday night (July 14). I almost made it! Almost, but never! The LRT door shut before I’ve got the courage to dive out.

Thank heavens!

Rewind: Actually, It took me few minutes to argue with myself (my best enemy), whether to take the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) or the  Light Rail Transit (LRT). Feeling quite beat, I opted for the latter for a special reason. I could have chosen MRT and just had the bus bound to Balibago at Cubao, but I chose the narrow road (figuratively). I’ve got a jeepney, not knowing exactly where the LRT station was. I was along Quezon Avenue, past 7:00 PM. It was my first time to be in the place, or I’ve gone there before (dunno exactly).

We’ll, I just got from a day’s information overload at the wordsmiths’ nosebleed event, Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Phils. (FWGP) OpenBook (I have an imaginative hemorrhage actually) 2:00- 5:00 PM at Sacro Costato, Quezon City (my first time to visit the retreat house). Famished, it was rewarding having a great meal at Cafe Vegis (a vegetarian resto nearby) with my FWGP colleagues, especially with Ime Morales, our guild’s founder and two of the speakers (guild members), Carljoe Javier and Yvette Tan. What a great bonding!

The morning’s rush was due to another meeting on Sunday morning: the general meeting and graduation rehearsal for Philippine Public Safety & Order Support Group (PPSOSG), which I’m under training. I am residing at Silang, Cavite, and the rendezvous at Maybunga, Pasig, so using my rusty Math skills, I calculated the time of travel including the time of possible waiting for vehicles, etc. The time of travel from Pasig to Quezon City was a greater rush. The meeting was supposed to start at 10 AM and end at 12 noon, but it lingered til 1 PM, so I had no time to have my lunch. I headed to Q.C. with a rumbling tummy.  Bracing the day, I knew it would be a long day.

But it was quite longer than expected The  (LRT) ride has never been extra adventurous!

Fast forward:

“Roosevelt to Gil Puyat Station: one long ride; great time to spill my thoughts on my phone.

No, not for texting.
No, not for FB or Twitter updating.

We already passed few stations when I’ve got the inspiration to write. The day’s rush robbed my vim; quite exhausted physically, but grateful I’ve got a crumb of energy. Here, while traveling in LRT, I’m writing. My cellphone warns me of its exhaustion, and the battery is draining, yet it cooperates with my mood to write. My memo is useful.

Kissing the travel dilemma adieu is effortless for me these days. And to see this guy with good built who offered a seat to another lady brought hope. Only few men do that. I grinned.

I also grinned and actually felt ashamed of another guy who took the seat of the lady who’s the recipient of the gentleman’s act. “Kaya ako tumayo, para sa babae yung seat…” He calmly rebuked the other guy. He automatically stood up. Ashamed. “Miss, upo ka na…” he muttered without looking. I was more ashamed of him, good thing, he didn’t retaliate.

I wish the journey’s longer. I love observing people.

Oh my, wish came true! Absorbed with writing, I missed my station!
(8:36pm)

***

(continued writing in the bus)

“Sir, anong station na po?” I inquired my seatmate for the second time.

“Gil Puyat station!”

Before I reached the door, it closed.

I sighed.
I looked around.
Some were looking at me.
I nodded.
I sat back.
I stopped writing.

LRT2_Recto_1

so-so

never mastered the routes yet LOL

never mastered the routes yet LOL

Then I had no choice but to be calm, go back to my seat as if nothing happened. I went out at Libertad (next station) and the rest was history.

Profound APOLOGY

Have you ever been in a situation when you apologize although you know and the other party that you didn’t do anything wrong?

I wondered at how a man could write an apology, the prolific way. 😀

When  was in college, I was part of the AUP Drama Guild, now ASTA (Adventist Society of Thespians and Artists). Actually, it was part of our World Literature class, to have a production. When I auditioned for the The Pilgrim’s Progress, the world renown classic and best allegory ever written, I was chosen to be the wife of Christian, the main character. I was supposed to be one of the villains. Unfortunately, the production didn’t pursue and was changed due to unexpected circumstances. Somehow I felt sorry.

Aside from reading and scrutinizing the play’s skit, I read the book itself and I searched for the oldest edition in our university library. Though I’m familiar with the book and read summaries and excerpts long way before my college years, I was amazed feasting on its content by heart. Though I am a voracious bookworm, I devour the contents slowly, thoroughly masticating each word, contemplating on the allegory. I felt like was brought back to the time and place when/where John scribbled that awesome book!

I was addicted to novel reading before, but grateful I overcame it through God’s grace. Although Ellen G. White told the youth to “put away every novel”, she called John Bunyan’s novel, Pilgrim’s Progress, “wonderful” in The Great Controversy, p.252, also SOP vol. 4, p.174 (1884). But it doesn’t mean she sanctioned other fictions to be read.

“Beginning the allegory, the narrator tells of his wandering through the wilderness, entering a den to sleep. He dreams that he sees a man in rags holding a book and crying. The man, named Christian, is visited by Evangelist, a spiritual guide who tells him he must leave his hometown, the City of Destruction, with a heavy burden on his back. Christian tries to convince his family to come with him, but they think he is mentally unwell and will recover. Instead of attempting to persuade them further, Christian leaves home.”

Among the classic poems, nothing surpasses the profound THE AUTHOR’s APOLOGY by  John Bunyan (1628–1688)  The Pilgrim’s Progress; The Harvard Classics.  1909–14.

It’s not just about its length, more of the inspiration to scribble that masterpiece!

“In his Apology, Bunyan affirms his aim to strengthen religious belief through fiction. He attacks the popular misconception that religion and fiction are enemies, asserting that the Bible contains many fictional parables. Bunyan also states that he wrote his work mainly for himself, to further his own spiritual development.”

Oh gracious poetic license! 🙂

The Author's Apology

For His Book

When at the first I took my Pen in hand
Thus for to write; I did not understand
That I at all should make a little Book
In such a mode; Nay, I had undertook
To make another, which when almost done,
Before I was aware I this begun.

And thus it was: I was writing of the Way
And Race of Saints, in this our Gospel-day,
Fell suddenly into an Allegory
About their Journey, and the way to Glory,
In more than twenty things which I set down:
This done, I twenty more had in my Crown,
And they again began to multiply,
Like sparks that from the coals of fire do fly.
Nay then, thought I, if that you breed so fast,
I'll put you by yourselves, lest you at last
Should prove and infinitum, and eat out
The Book that I already am about.

Well, so I did; but yet I did not think
To shew to all this World my Pen and Ink
In such a mode; I only thought to make
I knew not what: nor did I undertake
Thereby to please my Neighbor; no not I;
I did it mine own self to gratifie.

Neither did I but vacant seasons spend
In this my Scribble; nor did I intend
But to divert myself in doing this
From worser thoughts which make me do amiss.

Thus I set Pen to Paper with delight,
And quickly had my thoughts in black and white.
For having now my Method by the end,
Still as I pull'd, it came; and so I penn'd
It down, until it came at last to be
For length and breadth the bigness which you see.

Well, when I had thus put mine ends together,
I shew'd them others, that I might see whether
They would condemn them, or them justifie;
And some said, Let them live; some, Let them die;
Some said, John, print it; others said, Not so:
Some said, It might do good; others said, No.

Now was I in a straight, and did not see
Which was the best thing to be done by me:
At last I thought, Since you are thus divided,
I print it will, and so the case decided.

For, thought I, some I see would have it done,
Though others in that Channel do not run.
To prove then who advised for the best,
Thus I thought fit to put it to the test.

I further thought, if now I did deny
Those that would have it thus, to gratifie,
I did not know but hinder them I might
Of that which would to them be great delight.

For those which were not for its coming forth
I said to them, Offend you I am loth,
Yet since your Brethren pleased with it be,
Forbear to judge till you do further see.

If that thou wilt not read, let it alone;
Some love the meat, some love to pick the bone:
Yea, that I might them better palliate,
I did too with them thus Expostulate:

May I not write in such a stile as this?
In such a method too, and yet not miss
Mine end, thy good? why may it not be done?
Dark Clouds bring Waters, when the bright bring none.
Yea, dark or bright, if they their Silver drops
Cause to descend, the Earth, by yielding Crops,
Gives praise to both, and carpeth not at either,
But treasures up the Fruit they yield together;
Yea, so commixes both, that in her Fruit
None can distinguish this from that: they suit
Her well, when hungry; but, if she be full,
She spues out both, and makes their blessings null.

You see the ways the Fisher-man doth take
To catch the Fish; what Engines doth he make?
Behold how he engageth all his Wits,
Also his Snares, Lines, Angles, Hooks, and Nets.
Yet Fish there be, that neither Hook, nor Line,
Nor Snare, nor Net, nor Engine can make thine;
They must be grop'd for, and be tickled too,
Or they will not be catch'd, whate'er you do.

How doth the Fowler seek to catch his Game
By divers means, all which one cannot name?
His Gun, his Nets, his Lime-twigs, Light, and Bell;
He creeps, he goes, he stands; yea who can tell
Of all his postures? Yet there's none of these
Will make him master of what Fowls he please.
Yea, he must Pipe and Whistle to catch this;
Yet if he does so, that Bird he will miss.

If that a Pearl may in a Toad's head dwell,
And may be found too in an Oyster-shell;
If things that promise nothing do contain
What better is than Gold; who will disdain,
That have an inkling of it, there to look,
That they may find it? Now my little Book
(Though void of all those Paintings that may make
It with this or the other man to take)
Is not without those things that do excel
What do in brave, but empty notions dwell.

Well, yet I am not fully satisfied,
That this your Book will stand, when soundly try'd.

Why, what's the matter? It is dark. What tho?
But it is feigned: What of that I tro?
Some men, by feigning words as dark as mine,
Make truth to spangle, and its rays to shine.
But they want solidness. Speak man thy mind.
They drowned the weak; Metaphors make us blind.

Solidity indeed becomes the Pen
Of him that writeth things Divine to men;
But must I needs want solidness, because
By Metaphors I speak? Were not God's Laws,
His Gospel-Laws, in olden time held forth
By Types, Shadows, and Metaphors? Yet loth
Will any sober man be to find fault
With them, lest he be found for to assault
The highest Wisdom. No, he rather stoops,
And seeks to find out what by Pins and Loops,
By Calves, and Sheep, by Heifers, and by Rams,
By Birds, and Herbs, and by the blood of Lambs,
God speaketh to him. And happy is he
That finds the light and grace that in them be.

Be not too forward therefore to conclude
That I want solidness, that I am rude:
All things solid in shew not solid be;
All things in parables despise not we;
Lest things most hurtful lightly we receive,
And things that good are, of our souls bereave.

My dark and cloudy words they do but hold
The Truth, as Cabinets inclose the Gold.

The Prophets used much by Metaphors
To set forth Truth; yea, whoso considers
Christ, his Apostles too, shall plainly see,
That Truths to this day in such Mantles be.

Am I afraid to say that Holy Writ,
Which for its Stile and Phrase puts down all Wit,
Is everywhere so full of all these things,
Dark Figures, Allegories? Yet there springs
From that same Book that lustre, and those rays
Of light, that turns our darkest nights to days.

Come, let my Carper to his Life now look,
And find there darker lines than in my Book
He findeth any; Yea, and let him know,
That in his best things there are worse lines too.

May we but stand before impartial men,
To his poor One I dare adventure Ten,
That they will take my meaning in these lines
Far better than his lies in Silver Shrines.
Come, Truth, although in Swaddling-clouts, I find,
Informs the Judgment, rectifies the Mind,
Pleases the Understanding, makes the Will
Submit; the Memory too it doth fill
With what doth our Imagination please;
Likewise it tends our troubles to appease.

Sound words I know Timothy is to use,
And old Wive's Fables he is to refuse;
But yet grave Paul him nowhere doth forbid
The use of Parables; in which lay hid
That Gold, those Pearls, and precious stones that were
Worth digging for, and that with greatest care.

Let me add one word more. O man of God,
Art thou offended? Dost thou wish I had
Put forth my matter in another dress,
Or that I had in things been more express?
Three things let me propound, then I submit
To those that are my betters, as is fit.

1. I find not that I am denied the use
Of this my method, so I no abuse
Put on the Words, Things, Readers; or be rude
In handling Figure or Similitude,
In application; but, all that I may,
Seek the advance of Truth this or that way.
Denied, did I say? Nay, I have leave,
(Example too, and that from them that have
God better pleased, by their words or ways,
Than any man that breatheth now a-days)
Thus to express my mind, thus to declare
Things unto thee, that excellentest are.

2. I find that men (as high as Trees) will write
Dialogue-wise; yet no man doth them slight
For writing so; Indeed if they abuse
Truth, cursed be they, and the craft they use
To that intent; but yet let Truth be free
To make her sallies upon thee and me,
Which way it pleases God. For who knows how,
Better than he that taught us first to Plow,
To guide our Mind and Pens for his Design?
And he makes base things usher in Divine.

3. I find that Holy Writ in many places
Hath semblance with this method, where the cases
Do call for one thing, to set forth another;
Use it I may then, and yet nothing smother
Truth's golden Beams: nay, by this method may
Make it cast forth its rays as light as day.

And now, before I do put up my Pen,
I'll shew the profit of my Book, and then
Commit both thee and it unto that hand
That pulls the strong down, and makes weak ones stand.

This Book it chalketh out before thine eyes
The man that seeks the everlasting Prize;
It shews you whence he comes, whither he goes,
What he leaves undone, also what he does;
It also shews you how he runs and runs,
Till he unto the Gate of Glory comes.

It shews too, who set out for life amain,
As if the lasting Crown they would obtain;
Here also you may see the reason why
They lose their labour, and like Fools do die.

This Book will make a Traveller of thee,
If by its Counsel thou wilt ruled be;
It will direct thee to the Holy Land,
If thou wilt its directions understand:
Yea, it will make the slothful active be;
The blind also delightful things to see.

Art thou for something rare and profitable?
Wouldest thou see a Truth within a Fable?
Art thou forgetful? Wouldest thou remember
From New-year's-day to the last of December?
Then read my Fancies, they will stick like Burrs,
And may be to the Helpless, Comforters.

This Book is writ in such a Dialect
As may the minds of listless men affect:
It seems a novelty, and yet contains
Nothing but sound and honest Gospel strains.

Would'st thouedivert thyself from Melancholy?
Would'st thou be pleasant, yet be far from folly?
Would'st thou read Riddles, and their Explanation?
Or else be drowned in thy Contemplation?
Dost thou love picking meat? Or would'st thou see
A man i' th' Clouds, and hear him speak to thee?
Would'st thou be in a Dream, and yet not sleep?
Or would'st thou in a moment laugh and weep?
Wouldest thou lose thyself, and catch no harm,
And find thyself again without a charm?
Would'st read thyself, and read thou know'st not what,
And yet know whether thou art blest or not,
By reading the same lines? O then come hither,
And lay my Book, thy Head, and Heart together.
Like Christian, I long for that Celestial City, known as Mount Zion. Even so, come Lord Jesus!

Like Christian, I long for that Celestial City, known as Mount Zion. Even so, come Lord Jesus!
